COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand):
High due to the presence of biodegradable organic matter, proteins and fats from fish processing.

TKN (Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen):

Present in varying concentrations, depending on the fish processing plant process and operations.

High conductivities (salts added to the process).

Coming from equipment and utensil washing processes, as well as from by-products of fish processing.
Recommended Treatments:
Aerated Screening and Homogenisation:
Removing coarse solids and laminating and homogenising wastewater flows.
Refrigeration:
By means of heat exchange systems.
Physical-chemical Treatments by Flotation:
Flotation can be used as an initial physico-chemical treatment to remove suspended solids, fats and oils present in the water.
Biological Treatments:
After physico-chemical treatment, the wastewater passes through a biological nitrification-denitrification process. In this process, aerobic microorganisms break down the organic matter present in the wastewater, using oxygen to metabolise the contaminants and transform them into more stable products. Activated sludge, SBR or MBR systems can be used.
Treatment of Slurries and Sludge:
Storage and/or dewatering by mechanical means, such as dewatering screws and centrifuging.
