Leachate Treatment
Common Characteristics of Landfill Leachates:
COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand):
High due to the presence of biodegradable organic matter, chemical compounds and decomposing waste present in landfills.
BOD5 (Biochemical Oxygen Demand):
High due to the organic load present in the leachates.
TKN (Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen):
This can be significant due to the presence of nitrogenous compounds resulting from the decomposition of waste.
TSS (Total Suspended Solids):
Present in varying concentrations, depending on the type and the age of waste in the landfill.
Heavy Metals and Toxic Compounds:
From industrial and domestic waste dumped in the landfill.
Treatments Used
Homogenisation Tank:
Leachate collection systems are installed to capture the liquids generated from interaction with landfill waste.
Physico-chemical Treatment:
The leachates collected are subjected to physico-chemical processes to remove suspended solids, organic compounds and heavy metals. This may include methods such as filtration, coagulation-flocculation, oxidation and adsorption.
Treatment of Slurries and Sludge:
Slurries generated during leachate treatment can be dewatered and stabilised for safe final disposal.
Biological Treatment:
After physico-chemical treatment, leachates can go through biological processes such as aerobic biodegradation (in its variants: MBR, SBR or anaerobic) to further reduce the organic loading and contaminants present.
Heavy Metals and Toxic Compounds:
These are reduced significantly during treatment, although the specific effectiveness depends on the treatment processes applied.
The effectiveness achieved will depend on the leachate characteristics.
