MBR Systems (Membrane Bioreactors):
MBR systems are an advanced wastewater treatment technology that combines biological and membrane processes to produce high quality water. Ultrafiltration or microfiltration membranes are used in these systems to separate suspended solids and microorganisms from the treated water, so producing an effluent of high quality with low turbidity. MBRs offer several advantages, such as higher microbiological contaminant removal efficiency, a smaller footprint compared to conventional systems and the ability to operate under varying conditions.
External Ultrafiltration Systems:
In addition to MBRs, external ultrafiltration systems can be used as an alternative for pre-treated water in a biological pre-treatment reactor to improve water quality in these systems. Ultrafiltration membranes are used to remove suspended solids, particles and larger microorganisms from raw water, increasing the effectiveness of disinfection systems. Disinfection:
After treatment with MBR and ultrafiltration, the treated water may still contain pathogenic microorganisms that need to be removed for safe reuse. Disinfection is crucial to ensure that treated water meets the required quality standards. Some of the common disinfection technologies used in combination with MBR and ultrafiltration include chlorination, ultraviolet (UV) radiation and ozonation.
