potabilisation

Water treatment to make it fit to drink involves a series of processes to ensure the water complies with quality standards and is safe for human consumption. We will now describe the scenarios in which the different technologies are used in this process:

Physico-chemical Treatment:

This is mainly used for surface water or water from rivers that contains suspended solids, organic matter and dissolved chemical compounds. Physico-chemical processes, such as coagulation and flocculation, are used to agglutinate particles and compounds into larger suspensions that can be more easily removed in the following treatment steps.

Lamellar settling and filtration:

These technologies are used after physico-chemical treatment to separate the agglutinated solids from the water. Lamellar settling uses inclined vertical plates to increase the sedimentation area, while false bottoms are structures that allow for accumulation of sedimented solids for later removal.

Ozonation:

Ozonation is an advanced disinfection process used to eliminate pathogenic microorganisms, organic compounds and unwanted tastes and odours from water. It is typically applied in water that requires additional disinfection or improvement to taste and odour.

Pressure Filtration and Gravity Filtration:

These technologies are used to remove fine suspended particles, microorganisms and dissolved organic matter that may remain in the water after the previous processes. Pressure filtration uses granular media filters under pressure, while gravity filtration uses gravity to pass the water through a filter medium, supported on a false bottom.

Ultrafiltration:

This is filtration process uses semi-permeable membranes to retain larger particles, microorganisms and dissolved substances. It is used to produce high quality water with an effective barrier against viruses and chemical contaminants.

In summary, each of these technologies is used at different stages of treating water to make it fit to drink, depending on the specific characteristics of the raw water and the desired water quality requirements. The objective is to ensure a safe, high quality water supply for human consumption.
