Sludge treatment
Dewatering systems:
A variety of technologies are used to dewater sludge, including dewatering screws, filter presses and centrifuges. These methods are used after primary and biological treatment of the wastewater to reduce the water content in the sludge and produce a more manageable, less bulky solid waste, saving costs in its handling.
Dewatering Screw Systems:
Dewatering screw systems are efficient devices that use a combination of mechanical force and pressure to remove excess water from sludge. In this process, the sludge is fed into a screw that transports the solids through a series of compacting and dewatering zones. As the sludge advances along the screw, pressure is applied gradually to extract the water, producing a dewatered sludge with a reduced moisture content. This method is suitable for a wide range of sludge types and offers continuous, efficient operation and low energy consumption.
Filter Presses:
Filter presses are dewatering appliances that use filter plates and a hydraulic press to remove the water from sludge. In this process, the sludge is pumped into a series of chambers formed by filter plates, where pressure is applied to force the water through the filter media and separate it from the solids. Once the desired degree of dewatering has been achieved, the dewatered solids are removed and disposed of as waste. The recovered water can then be recycled for reuse or passed on for further treatment. Filter presses are especially effective for sludge with high solids contents and they offer a semi-automated operation that enables precise dewatering process control.
Centrifuges:
Centrifuges are dewatering devices that use centrifugal force to separate solids and liquids from sludge. In this process, the sludge is fed into a drum that rotates at high speed, where the centrifugal force generates a separation between the solid particles and the water. The dewatered solids accumulate at the edge of the drum and are discharged periodically, while the water recovered is extracted through a discharge system.
