Common Characteristics of Wastewater in the Juice/Vegetable Preservation Industry:
COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand):
Variable, but can be high due to the presence of biodegradable organic matter, such as vegetable residues and chemicals used in the preservation process.
BOD5 (Biochemical Oxygen Demand at 5 days)
Similar to COD, reflecting the organic load present in the wastewater.
TKN (Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen):
Low or deficient, which may require adjustments to pH and nutrients for effective treatment.
TSS (Total Suspended Solids):
Present in varying concentrations. These may include plant residue particles and solids from the preservation process.
High Seasonality:
Concentrated at specific times of vegetable production and processing for preservation. Its characteristics may vary significantly depending on the product processed.
Recommended Treatment:
Aerated Screening and Homogenisation:
Removing coarse solids and laminating and homogenising wastewater flows.
Nutrient Neutralisation and Adjustment:
Critical for proper biological reactor operation and to compensate for nutrient deficiency in wastewater.
Aerobic Biological Treatment:
Wastewater passes through an aerobic biological process, where microorganisms break down organic matter, reducing COD and BOD5. Activated sludge, SBR or MBR systems can be used for this purpose.
Treatment of Slurries and Sludge:
Involving sludge storage and/or dewatering by mechanical means, such as dewatering screws and centrifuging.
